The Mojave

Rex Bell and Clara Bow moved to Searchlight, a town located in the Mojave Desert with abundant mineral wealth. The Mojave Desert has been described as a wasteland, an area only mentioned as a place to cross through to get from one livable place to another. However, this perception does not meet reality. The Mojave served as a homeland for Native Peoples and became a place for dreams for Searchlight miners highlighting the desert’s ecological diversity. Preserving the Walking Box Ranch as a historic house museum provides opportunities for people to better understand the Mojave Desert and learn lessons about the past occupants, landscapes, and the historic times.
